Final Paper (25% of final grade)
The final paper is due Friday, June 12th at Noon on D2L. Papers must be 4-7 pages in length, double-spaced (Times New Roman font, standard 1-inch margins). Papers should follow the Chicago Manual of Style format. Papers must include a thesis statement which must be either bolded or underlined. Papers should be on one of the following prompts (or on a prompt of the student’s choosing, provided that the student has had the topic approved by the instructor no later than 1 week prior to the due date of the paper):
Any sources used for the final paper must be quoted and cited appropriately. Students who plagiarize part or all of their final paper will receive a zero on the assignment and will fail the class.
Students may submit a draft to the instructor no later than 1 week prior to the due date. The following is a brief grading rubric:
A | The paper has a clear and well-argued thesis. The student has a nuanced position that is well supported by the text and is carefully argued for. The paper is well-organized (introduction, body/argument, conclusion) and grammatically clear. |
B | The paper has a clear and well-argued thesis. The student’s position in the paper could use a little more work/evidence from the text. The paper is organized, but there may be a few minor grammatical problems. |
C | The paper does not have a clear and well-argued thesis. The student’s position in the paper is somewhat unclear or is not sufficiently connected to the text. The paper is somewhat organized, but there are some grammatical and structural problems. |
D | The paper does not have a clear or well-argued thesis statement. The student’s position is not defended by the text. It is unclear how the paper relates to the text or to the course in general. The paper is unorganized with major grammatical and structural problems. |
F | The paper has no thesis statement. The student does not present any knowledge or understanding of the text or philosopher whatsoever. The paper is unorganized and difficult to comprehend. |
