Equal Rights for Women

INTRODUCTORY sentence needed here. TOPIC sentence needed here. The inequality of power exhibited in the article, “Equal Rights for Women” enrages me through the following reasons: the gender discrimination in the work place, the prejudice against women as leaders.
The article “Equal Rights for Women” by the author Shirley Chisholm was written for May 21,1969. She was the first African American woman elected to the United States Congress in 1968, and represented New York state for seven terms from 1969 to 1983(Biological, 2016). In addition, She was not only the first woman to run for president, but she was also the first candidate for President of the United States in 1972, at the same time, she also became the first woman ever to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination (Biological, 2016). For this reason, she understand the meaning of discrimination and prejudice because she is an african-american, however, in her speech, she chooses to focus on the unequal human rights that women have. This topic reminds me of the power that is not share equally between men and women in the society. Based on the statements from the report, power should be equal for women.
The inequality of power exhibited in the speech reveals the gender discrimination in the work place. In more detail, that means women are not equally treated because they are perceived to be less intelligent or capable than males. According to Chisholm in the speech Equal Rights for Women states that, “Sufficient proof of this is the concentration of women in lower paying, menial, unrewarding jobs and their incredible scarcity in the upper level jobs.”(Gifts of Speech, 1969) With this in mind, I feel enraged when I examine this speech because there should be no sexism in the work place. More specifically, People should be hired due to their abilities like education and experience instead of their gender. In my opinion, sexism and gender discrimination should never be approved. In comparison in the past, women in China could be teachers, but they could not be engineers or doctors at the time of The Cultural Revolution. This indicates that compared with men, women were believed to have many constraints. For instance, women were thought to be lacking in logical and too emotional. In addition, women are usually less physically strong than men because of their physiological structure of body. Although, the unequal treatment of women in China at this time could not have been from any form of racism, as in the speech, they were still faced gender discrimination in the work place. In my experience, as a common situation that gender discrimination usually exist widespread. When I graduated from high school in Toronto and started trying to look for some part-time job. The deepest impression that I remember is the manager from the Pear-Hot-Pot restaurant, who told me in the interview that I had no chance to be hired because of my gender. He denied me directly without giving me any chance to try to work as a waitress. The reason why he made this decision is because he said women are weak, and they don’t have enough strength to carry food and beverages, which is dangerous if the food or drinks are hot, and may also give customers a bad impressive in the restaurant. Though, both he and I were Chinese, and there was no racism involved, but he still did not hire me because of gender discrimination. Thus, the unequal power displayed in the speech clearly reveals gender discrimination in the work place.
The inequality of power exhibited in the speech reveals prejudice against women as leaders. More specifically, that means the society is in favour of giving more chances to males, and less to females in some professions. As Chisholm indicates in the speech, “Why is it acceptable for women to be secretaries, librarians, and teachers, but totally unacceptable for them to be managers, administrators, doctors, lawyers, and Members of Congress.”(Gifts of Speech, 1969) With this in mind, I feel enraged about this unfair conditions when I heard this quote, because it demonstrates a reality in the society that females and males have unequal opportunities in positions of power and leadership. In other words, the methods for treating females that try to get leadership positions are always strict, prejudiced, and limited. The quote from the speech indicates that men believe women are separated into the weaker group of human beings naturally and that is biased to judge females with prejudice against them get a higher position. In my opinion, women are more able to use both sides of their brains while men are always focused on one point to solve a problem logically and efficiently. Women need to play various roles like mother, daughter, or teacher, which is complicated and requires them to multitask. In addition, women always can think about one thing in disparate aspects. It is more practical that women are even more intelligent in some ways. In comparison, 30 years ago in China, women could not control their own lives. For example, the marriages of both my grandmother and mother were introduced and made by someone else who unites persons together, so they could not choose their own spouses. Although they could not be leaders to make their own decisions because the society and culture are restricted their freedom of consciousness. As in the speech, prejudice of women is still a seriously problem like the Chisholm described women do not have strong ability and they are too emotional to be a leader by themselves. Thus, the unequal power between men and women is displayed in the speech through the prejudice against women in leadership positions
In conclusion, the unjustness of the power distribution between men and women clearly identified in the article, “Equal Rights for Women”, is offensive for the following aspects: the gender discrimination in all parts of the work place and the prejudice against women as leaders. The author Shirley Chisholm has a deeply understanding of this issue through her own experience.
