All teachers must individualize their instruction and environment for each child on a regular basis. These changes do not have to be big; often introducing new materials or books can be a great way to help children work on areas that are still developing. Sometimes more directed teacher-initiated activities are the best way to meet children’s changing needs and other times play materials and exploration topics can meet individual needs.

Review the following case studies and indicate simple ways to individualize the environment or instruction to help make it developmentally appropriate for each child.

  • Two-year-old Sarah’s family has just welcomed a new baby brother to her family. Sarah is both excited about him and caring for him like her baby dolls and confused by the change in her mom’s time and attention. She has always enjoyed 1-1 teacher time, but lately has engaged with peers less and less.
  • Four-year-old Rajish is the oldest in the class and often completes activities more quickly than other children. He loves to read and play in the kitchen area, making elaborate pretend meals. He does not like to take turns and sometimes becomes angry when he cannot be first.
  • Five-year-old Karaleen spends most of her free choice time in the creative arts area. She loves to get her hands in globs of paint, will focus intently on working clay around in her hands for 30 minutes or more, and paints at the easel with passionate movements, mixing all the paint colors together. She avoids the literacy center and is having trouble gripping a marker and forming letters.
  • Seven-year-old Jackson loves to be on the playground. As soon as the door opens, he bursts outside and is a whirlwind of energy the entire recess period. He interacts well with his classmates and is always happy to be working in a group. He sometimes has trouble focusing during indoor time, particularly during reading time.
