Context: Jerrold Packard chronicles the Jim Crow system of oppression in the American South, leading us up through the “end” of Jim Crow with the Civil Rights Movement. Michelle Alexander picks up where Packard’s optimistic views of the end of Jim Crow left off, and argues that beginning in the late 20th century, a new system of Jim Crow emerged with the development of Mass Incarceration.
In the “Preface” (see your CR), Alexander says,
I am writing this book … for another audience – those who have been struggling to persuade their friends, neighbors, teachers, co-workers, or political representatives that something is eerily familiar about the way our criminal justice system operates, something that looks and feels a lot like an era we supposedly left behind ….
Central Questions: Explore the two systems of Jim Crow, the old and the new. To what extent is there overlap? Explain 2 key areas of similarity, citing evidence and explaining important context from each work. Additionally, what is one significant difference between the two systems, other than the time period in which they take place?
