Impact of migration on the ability of diverse groups assimilate to cultural norms

Asgari, H., Zaman, N., &Jin, X. (2017). Understanding immigrants’ mode choice behavior in Florida: analysis of neighborhood effects and cultural assimilation. Transportation research procedia25, 3083-3099.

Florida’s population is highly comprised of immigrants living in the neighborhood with the local communities. The research study was concluded to examine the travel behavior among this group of people, especially by how they chose the modes of transport. Two significant assumptions were made as factors that determined the change and assimilation of the behavior of the immigrants. The two include typologies, a determining factor, and cultural assimilation based on the duration the immigrants have stayed in the United States. The researcher expected that from the results of this study, it would be possible to provide a clear understanding of the relationship between neighborhood effects on individual behavior and the behavioral assimilation in how the immigrants choose their mode of transport over time.

The results of the research study indicated that household income ability impacts the likelihood models of taking individual driving of carpooling for the entire family. However, this depends on the family size, where the large families are forced to take alternative modes. Thus, the research gives the impression that the foreign-born groups will, in a more likely situation, take alternative modes compared to people born in the United States. Most important, the immigrant behavior on the model choice is highly influenced by neighborhood typologies, including the family bonds and social status. For instance, a high-status family will most likely choose to drive alone while on the other hand, a family with strong family bonds will go for carpooling when attending recreational trips (Lu, Chen, & Wang, 2019). However, immigrants whose families have low socioeconomic status and low bonds will opt for alone drives.

Analysis

The United States has been identified as home to people from around the world; thus, a perfect fit for this study. For many years many different studies have been conducted to explain the level of living among this group of people. Still, as the researcher states, the behavior and cultural assimilation in transport aspects have been left out (Purnell, &Fenkl, 2019). Hence, immigrants’ transport behavior needs to be identified based on the fundamental factors that influence their choices.

Medical and mental health issues in multicultural populations

Das, B. (2019). Mental health trauma treatment within the current Mediterranean refugee crisis. International Journal for the Advancement of Counselling41(4), 481-491.

Refugee migration into the United States is currently very high compared to another time in modern history. The research study indicates that refugee resettlement does not necessarily take concerns on the refugee well-being because it focuses on the regulations provided in most cases. Though the countries that host refugees have developed human rights services for this group, they should consider the management of refugee needs and mental health. In most cases, refugees are traumatic survivors basically because they flee from war, diseases, and political conflicts in their countries (Kirmayer, 2019). Such traumatic events result in mental health issues that arise from separation from their support system.

Attending this group of people is sometimes challenging based on the differential cultural believes and practices. The nursing team should be prepared to understand and accommodate the different practices in order to help build a better rapport with the refugee clients and reframe their ability to self-control. However, in many instances, the services provided do not support the refugee fight against mental illnesses because the service providers lack the understanding of the culture and language of the refugee population concerned.

Analysis

Workplace diversity has been in the society for a while, but it is yet to bring out the true picture of its existence. Nursing cultural competence has been emphasized in the most prolonged period, but it has not been achieved in most areas and especially when dealing with vulnerable populations like the refugees (Huang, & Zane, 2016). The diversity has been implemented to a great extent, but it is bound to fail, especially when dealing with refugees. The medical sector deals with western society’s diagnostic tools while there is a strain when the clients are supposed to attend to their appointments. Barriers such as transportation, linguistics, and failed patient-practitioner trust are some of the main causes of the refugees’ failed mental health intervention.

Integral features of identity development according to group status

Pellerone, M., Passanisi, A., &Bellomo, M. F. P. (2015). Identity development, intelligence structure, and interests: a cross-sectional study in a group of Italian adolescents during the decision-making process. Psychology research and behavior management8, 239.

Identity development is thought to be the developmental stage for adolescence, but apart from this development, an individual will develop profound personality traits. An adolescent individual has a lot of decisions that are expected from him or her without failure or mistakes (Rast III, Hogg, & van Knippenberg, 2018). Primarily at this stage of life, a lot of influence is experienced based on the groups they associate with, but in the end, it is only important that they focus.

The research study’s objective was to examine the role and importance of personal identity in relation to identity and decision-making styles, predictor variables, and school success. The study had a total of 417 participants who lived in Enna city in Italy. The student filled an Ego Identity Process Questionnaire that ensured the measuring of their identity measuring and the individual general decision-making style.  The results of the study indicated that school performance among students is positively related to decision-making style and identity development. Therefore, it is essential that the identity development process is intervened especially for this group of people for increased aptitudes and enhanced school performance.

The research study was limited in several ways, especially because it does not include the sampling method used to obtain the participants. It could result in biased results if it did not represent the sample as it should. Therefore, the results by generalizing do not apply to everyone, so it not externally valid. Besides, the researcher highlighted the missing longitudinal-type of study, which is also known as an observational study. The observational study design is important in researching adolescents’ behavior and attitude based on their identity development.

Analysis

Adolescents’ identity development is, in most cases, related to the relationships they have with their peers. Thus, belonging to a particular peer group is positively connected to identity development resulting in excellent school performance (Haslam et al., 2019). The decision-making style is highly influenced by the interest profile of the students, level of identity exploration, and the level of identity commitment.
