Introduction

Paulo Coelho is a celebrated Brazilian author and novelist who was born in the city of Rio de Janeiro in 1947 (Mayer, 2017). Coelho always wanted to write, but the parents were skeptical about his passion because the parents believed in other career paths. Hence, he dropped out of school a couple of times to become ta hippie until the parents allowed him to write. He is famously known for his book The Alchemist, which received positive reviews from all over the world. On the other hand, Leonardo da Vinci was born in Florence and received education in the studios of painters (Da Vinci, 2012). He never acquired any formal education even though he worked in many cities in Italy, thus interacting with various cultures. His artwork Mona Lisa is still influential up to date, and its value is almost a billion dollars. Hence, the research will concentrate on Coelho and da Vinci thus outlining their similarities and differences to a certain level.

Works

First and foremost, Coelho’s book, The Alchemist, was the most influential, and it influenced the world positively. Jonson (2018) explains that the Alchemist’s moral lesson was to affirm that everything works for the good of those who work hard. In that, the universe always has a plan for everything to fall into place for those who desire good things from the bottom of their hearts (Jonson, 2018). Thus, Coelho used the lesson to inspire people not to give up no matter what they go through in life.

Secondly, Leonardo da Vinci’s artwork, the Mona Lisa, is considered among the most famous artworks of all time. It outlines the Mona Lisa, which seems to be at the Centre of vision of every viewer. The technique is not an easy one, and contemporary artists can still not fathom how he did that without a formal education. The Mona Lisa has touched many generations because it was created during the renaissance. Thus, it is imperative to note that Da Vinci’s artwork has touched many people, thus impacting the world positively, like Coelho.

Culture and Tradition

First, Leonardo da Vinci is also known as the ‘Renaissance man’ because of how he represents the time of the renaissance (Felluga, 2020). His art mainly affirmed the culture of the renaissance when Europe was keen on new inventions in various fields. The Italian way of life and beliefs can be seen from several works of Leonardo da Vinci. The same applies to Coelho, who outlines the culture of the Brazilian people and the city of Rio de Janeiro. In his book Eleven Minutes (2003), he talks about Rio with pride, thus outlining some of the things that take place in the city (Mayer, 2017). For example, the city is mainly known for fun, but it also encompasses rich culture and many tribes.

Second, Leonardo da Vinci was religious, and that is how he managed to create the outstanding Last Supper art. The artwork is very detailed, and that would not have happened if he never read the bible or paid attention to religious teachings (Vasari et al., 2019). Thus, some can outline the he even believed in God because of the various arts he has about religious activities. The Last Supper was a very special event in the bible hence affirming the renaissance man was a religious person. The same applies to Paulo Coelho, who believed in God and waited for a sign before writing another book. The substantiated that God sent him a sign in the form of ta white feather hence inspiring him to write another book. He claimed to have prayed for a sign, and when it came, he was convinced that it was God.

Artistry

Both da Vinci and Coelho were philosophical because they made attempts to explain the universe as they saw it and the interactions between people. Da Vinci concentrated on human dignity or humanism, thus trying to explain the position of people in the universe. Also, he believed in a superpower which was working for the good of everyone in the long run. The same applies to Coelho, who was keen on explaining the universe from time immemorial. Coelho ascertained that there are forces in the universe that work towards the good of good people (Mayer, 2017). He affirmed that true heart desires must be achieved because of some of these forces.

Leonardo used his art to explain happenings around him while Coelho used his writing to talk about them. The painting of the Mona Lisa still impacts the world today because of the passion and dedication that Da Vinci put into it. Lisa Gherardini was obviously an important figure in Da Vinci’s life. On the other hand, in Eleven Minutes (2003), Coelho used his skills to talk about the filth of Rio from prostitution to crime.

Conclusion

Conclusively, Leonardo da Vinci and Paulo Coelho may not have come from the same time in history, but they shared passion and love for their artworks. Coelho’s novel, The Alchemist, concentrates on explaining the universe and interaction between human beings. Leonardo also explained the universe by focusing on happenings, mainly in Italy. The research delves into the biographies of both artists, which are not the same, but there are similarities which shape who they become later in life.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY #6

Leonardo Da Vinci

Why have you selected this artist?  How can they be compare to your author?

I have selected Leonardo Da Vinci because he was one of the greatest artists during the renaissance, and his works are appreciated until today. The Mona Lisa is the most famous work of art today, and is valued to be worth almost a billion dollars today. Thus begs the question from everyone, why is Mona Lisa so unique? The answer to the question is explained differently with contemporary artists.  The bottom line is Da Vinci was exceptional, and that is why he lives on to date. Hence the discussion will outline how Leonardo da Vinci compares to Paulo Coelho.

First and foremost, Da Vinci was spiritual, and that is how he created the Last Supper art, which is equally famous. The Last Supper was very detailed, and that would have never happened if Leonardo never read the bible. Also, Paulo Coelho asserted that they always waited for God to give him a sign with feathers before he wrote another book. He ascertained that he got the feathers in a window, and that is why he continued writing. Thus, it is imperative to ask, did Leonardo Da Vinci believed in God? Secondly, in the book the Alchemist, Coelho seems to be keen on the subject of the universe and its relationship to the people. The main message of the book is that the universe always conspires to give an individual the true heart desire (Jonson, 2018). Leonardo Da Vinci also used his work of art to explain the universe and invent new things to help people. For example, he conceptualized a parachute and a helicopter, which are very improved today. Thirdly, Da Vinci was exceptional even though he never actually received any formal education. The same applies to Coelho, who dropped out of law school to become a hippie before finding his calling. Both were not trained to deliver the great works, but they did, which means they were genius.

What prior knowledge do you have about this artist?

Leonardo Da Vinci never received any formal education, thus making his works of art pure genius (Da Vinci, 2012). Many artists have referred to him as a genius because of how he developed so much exemplary work without formal education. The assumption is accurate because how can an uneducated person come up with such great art? I also know that Leonardo Da Vinci created the Mona Lisa, which is the most famous artwork in history. Even though it was created centuries ago, the artwork is still the most coveted, and its price is valued in billions of dollars at the moment. Moreover, Leonardo Da Vinci was spiritual, and that is how he managed to create exceptionally Christian artworks (Da Vinci, 2012). The Last Supper is very detailed, and it looks real, depending on what is written in the bible. Also, the Mona Lisa is exceptional since it seems to be at the center of the vision of every viewer. That is an almost impossible technique that many contemporary artists still struggle with. Thus one can ask, how did he manage to do all these while writing backward?

Conclusively, Leonardo Da Vinci seems to share a lot with Paulo Coelho, as ascertained in the discussion. They both were not well formally educated, yet they produced amazing works of art. They were both spiritual; that is why they tried to explain the universe and its relationship to God.
