From brand building, storyboarding concepts, gathering and communicating research, pitch presentations, to visual communication: storytelling is increasingly pronounced one of the most important skills for designers.
In this unit you will investigate how you can use the power of fiction and storytelling in your design work. You will individually submit a portfolio of work of tasks which have been designed to train your design storytelling abilities. This portfolio can be submitted in physical or digital format.
The portfolio must include:
-6 word story A short task requiring you to produce a creative story in just 6 words. -Future Bodies Imagine you are going to equip a person for surviving the environmental, political and social challenges of 50 years from now. What would this look like? Individually you will need to produce a 3d design using Meshmixer, a 100-200 word description and 5 pages of supporting images and text as an appendix.
You will be able to find more detailed information on these tasks on Aula.
You may also include any further work/research dealing with the topics in the unit if you wish.
Think carefully about the visual language and the storytelling throughout your submission, as this will form part of your assessment. Make sure the portfolio itself is well designed.

Unit Description |
In this unit you will be introduced to different methods of fictional storytelling in a range of design disciplines. You will explore fields such as speculative and critical design and will be introduced to work of designers from a range of disciplines who use fiction as part of their work or process. (Cultivate)
The unit will discuss utopias, dystopias and future ethics in design. You will explore and critique aspects of the present and future using narrative techniques. This could be for the purposes of encouraging debate about a certain topic, increasing public knowledge of a particular topic, shaping government policy, influencing the direction of scientific research, or supporting a commercial design proposition. (Advocate) You will use techniques such as visual storytelling, narrative building, and future forecasting to create a multi-disciplinary design project. The Five Principles underpin the Mindsets and Skillsets Manifesto and are the foundation upon which all course curriculum frameworks and unit specifications are based. The relevant Principles as stated below have been mapped against the Learning Outcomes relevant to each course unit and at each level (see Programme Specifications for full description of the Five Principles):
