Summer 2020

Due Dates:

Format:

  1. Double-spaced
  2. 12pt. Times New Roman font
  3. 1-inch margins

Assignment Sections:

  1. Research-based persuasive paper of 6-7 pages about a topic of your choosing (Death penalty is my chosen topic).
  2. Executive Summary of 1-2 pages that re-presents your research in a more visual format that distils your main ideas. This is not merely re-writing the research paper but transforming it into a new medium. You will do in the workplace quite a bit.
  3. Annotated Bibliography of 1-2 pages, containing full citations and annotations of at least 7 sources.

Assignment Tips and Suggestions:

  1. Select a debatable topic: not many people disagree with the claim that “Puppies are cute.”
    • Brainstorm by listing list issues about which you feel passionately. To help brainstorming, think about problems and potential solutions to those problems—problems inthe environment, in politics, or in present cultural trends.
  2. Come up with a persuasive main claim (thesis) and recommended action. The thesis statement could look like these:
    • “On the issue of [topic], I believe [main claim]. Therefore, we must change by [recommended action].”
  3. Appeal to audiences opposed to your main claim and your recommended action.
    • When brainstorming, set up “opposing viewpoints” columns in which you list who may resist youand who may agree—and who may fit into neither group.
    • Find reasoning and evidence that would convince those who are skeptical.
    • You have to advocate your chosen main claim by addressing how it is better than other perspectives and claims.
    • The best format for this essay is “They Say/I Say” formatting, where you first offer the opinions of other writers before offering your opinion.
    • When formulating your own opinion, try to include a new idea that no one else has thought of regarding this topic.

  • Turn in final draft: 5/29

Preparing an Executive Summary

Step 1: Always summarize!

  • Text should not be the focus—limit how much text you use
  • But, your argument should be clearly stated in a prominent position on the first page
  • Below (or around) the argument, put your organization, name, and date

Step 2: Emphasize images, graphics, graphs, and non-textual items

  • The really good Executive Summaries translate their text into images that capture the overall argument
  • One strategy is to rephrase a sectionof your paper as a question, with the answer being in a mixed-media format that incorporates text and images

Step 3: Finish with “the ask”

  • The Executive Summary should finish with a specific request, usually a rephrasing of the argument in a more direct manner.

Preparing an Annotated Bibliography

Step 1: Examine possible sources (books, articles, websites, etc.) on your topic. Select

7 that are most useful to you. You are looking for:

  • a variety of positions. 3 of your sources have to be opposed to your claim. In order to advocate for a given position, you must demonstrate its superiority over other options. That is why I have the requirement of including at least three sources from perspectives other than your own. You have to know your enemy.
  • an authoritative, credible voice in each source
  • a clear argument that uses solid reasoning and evidence to support its thesis.

Step 2: Cite each source using:

  • MLA (Modern Language Association)
  • 12-point Times New Roman font
  • double-spaced lines.

Step 3: Read the source carefully for the following:

  • The thesis:both the introduction andthe conclusion can help you with this.
  • Look for repetition of key terms or ideas. Follow them through the text and seewhat the author does with them. Note especially the key terms that recur in the thesis.
  • Notice how the text is laid out and organized. What are the main divisions orsections? What is emphasized? Why? Accounting for this will help you to movebeyond listing contents and toward giving an account of the argument.
  • Pay attention to the opening sentence(s) of each paragraph, where authors oftenstate concisely their main point in the paragraph.
  • Look for paragraphs that summarize the argument. A section may sometimesbegin or conclude with such a paragraph
