Assignment Details
If you are a student looking to advance within your organization, this is an opportunity to build a useful class product that can be applied to your work environment to avoid being externally disrupted by new technologies and/or IT trends. If you are student looking to shift to a new industry or are looking for job opportunities, this is an opportunity to build a useful class product that can be used to showcase your knowledge and understanding of the future for an organization that will be disrupted by new technologies and/or IT trends.
The project consists of three parts
For the outline part (Part One of the Course Project), you will need to provide a detailed breakdown of the following information:
• Industry Overview
o What industry are you focusing on for your project context?
o Who are the key industry organizations (similar to a competitors analysis)?
o Initial Assessment of Disruption Susceptibility within the Industry
• Identification of Three (3) technologies or IT trends likely to disrupt the industry (including a justification for each selection)
o Currently Disrupting Industry (< 2 years)
o Likely to Disrupt Industry (3 to 5 years)
o Your Moon Shot to Disrupt Industry (> 5 years)
• Identification & Analysis of Leading Disruptor Organizations
o Key Disrupter Organization in Technology or Trend – Who is the key organization that is leading the development of the emerging technology or IT trend? (each one)
o Key Disrupter Organization in Industry – Who is the current leading organization within your industry for the emerging technology or IT trend? (each one)
• Research Strategy
o Initial Sources of Information (brief description of your initial findings)
o Identify at least one person/organization you will attempt to reach out to for discussing these emerging technologies and/or IT trends
• Questions for the Professor
o What questions do you have for the professor that you want explicitly addressed beyond “What do you think of my outline?” 🙂
Additional Advice & Tips
In terms of research, I strongly encourage you to utilize professional relationships and connections with organizations to ask questions and solicit feedback when choosing your emerging technologies and/or IT trends. This will likely spark interesting discussions. Some areas that could be very useful in terms of professional networking are LinkedIn groups, Twitter, and Facebook pages. I have had several students utilize social media to engage organizations with great success (even small comments/observations can help) when tweeting organizations or posting in LinkedIn groups (people want to share their opinions). This can be really helpful both as an information gathering resource and professional networking opportunity.
I have also found the Wall Street Journal CIO Journal, NY Times Technology section, CIO magazine, and Bloomberg Technology section to be great initial sources of discussion online. As a UAB student, you have access to Gartner, Business Insights, Harvard Business Review, and many other truly amazing resources through the UAB Sterne Library. Lastly, groups such as those found on LinkedIn, SIM, AL CIO, Tech Brimgham, Innovate Birmingham, ISACA, ISC2, etc. are excellent sources of both professionals and information. This is a great opportunity to network and learn. People usually create very positive impressions of individuals that are asking for their opinions and engaging with them.
Grading Rubric
Your grade will be based on the completeness and maturity of your submission. This is a complete or incomplete grade. A strategy that is not supportable or technologies and IT trends that are not justifiable for their selection will result in an incomplete and require a re-submission. This is meant to be a low-cost opportunity to gain feedback and ensure your final product is something that will have immediate impact in your professional life. Treat it seriously. The outline is worth 10% of the course project grade.
