Student collaboration is a vital component of blended classrooms.  Blended learning environments encourage students to learn in collaborative settings using online tools to support inquiry and discovery learning.  Collaboration incites learners to share their knowledge with others by fostering face-to-face or online communication.  Collaboration also provides opportunities for students to fully explore content or experience more real-life learning situations that require social interaction.  This collaboration could take place inside, as well as, outside of the classroom.

Asynchronous learning is a general term used to describe any type of education, instruction, or learning that does not occur in the same place or at the same time.  Examples of synchronous learning activities are class discussions, seminars, group work, peer-to-peer interaction, etc.  Asynchronous examples includes discussion boards, email, blogs, wikis, social media, etc.
